About John Shiga

Welcome to my blog!

I am an Associate Professor in the School of Professional Communication at Ryerson University, where I teach cross-cultural communication, Internet law and policy, multimodal communication, and science communication. I’ve published on digital audio, intellectual property, media theory and interspecies communication. My current research focuses on the cultural history of sonar. I’m particularly interested in the role of underwater listening technologies in the transformation of scientific, military and popular understandings of the ocean.

Much of my work as a researcher and instructor in communication studies focuses on the intersections between media, law and culture. This blog is about my exploration of those intersections – with occasional forays into various other topics that intrigue me.
